The origins of Chagnon & Fils
Passionate about mechanics and entrepreneurship, Eugène Chagnon, then 29 years old, left his hometown of Sainte-Cécile-de-Milton and settled a few kilometers north in Saint-Dominique, where he built a garage to repair automobiles in June 1925. The first car he repaired was a 1923 Hudson. That was the beginning. But since there were few cars on the roads of Quebec at the time, Mr. Chagnon explored new opportunities such as electricity and telephony. After obtaining his electrician’s license, he began installing electrical systems in homes and farms in the surrounding area, while a few employees continued the mechanical work at the garage. From 1925 to 1935, in addition to his other ventures, he also managed the installation and maintenance of rural telephone lines in Saint-Dominique.
A constantly evolving vision
In 1934, the garage’s mechanical focus shifted toward a specialty: truck repair. This opened the door to partnerships with agencies looking for distributors, and Chagnon became an agent for Bedford dump bodies. As business volume grew and space became limited, Chagnon built a new garage in 1937, adjacent to the family home. A second floor was added to serve as a community hall where various social and political events were held. From 1934 to 1942, Chagnon & Fils became an authorized dealer for Ford automobiles. Between 1939 and 1944, the company also secured a contract for winter road maintenance in the surrounding area and began selling agricultural machinery—a service that continued until 1961. Finally, from 1941 to 1951, during World War II, Chagnon added tire vulcanization to its range of services.
A new beginning
On January 31, 1951, everything came to a halt when a major fire destroyed the garage, the community hall, and the family home. Undeterred, Eugène and his son Fernand began rebuilding a new garage that spring, restarting operations on the same site where Chagnon & Fils still operates today.
A passion passed down through generations
Life went on, and the passage of time began to show. In 1962, Fernand took over the garage, following in his father’s footsteps. In 1964, he expanded the company’s services to include the manufacturing of control shafts, straightening of truck and trailer frames, and the installation of power take-offs and hydraulic systems for mobile applications.
As for Eugène, his passion for the business never faded—he continued to visit regularly until the age of 98 and passed away at the remarkable age of 100. In 1984, Chagnon also became a distributor for pneumatic products and specialized bulk transport equipment from Canadian manufacturer Walinga.
An expansion worthy of a legacy
In 1988, it was Fernand’s turn to consider retirement, and his three sons—Michel, Daniel, and André—took over the business and carried on the legacy. Today, Michel and André continue to lead Chagnon & Fils, while Daniel has stepped away. Since then, the company has continued to grow, expanding its facilities multiple times to meet increasing demand. In 1999, a major milestone was reached with a significant expansion project that doubled the size of the garage to 20,000 square feet.
Today, Chagnon & Fils is powered by a team of 25 skilled and dedicated employees who proudly uphold the remarkable reputation built over the past 100 years. This milestone is just a chapter in a rich family story—with many more still to be written.
